“I had this piano sequence that reminded me of a rocket taking off. I kept playing with the phrasing until I came up with a complementing melody. I envisioned a young man with a back-pack; stuffed with overnight clothing and a picnic lunch. Not just any young man, but one that could step across planets and galaxies. That’s right, a little “sci-fi” thinking. Big Fat Steps to have lunch with his girl on the other side of the universe.”
Lyrics
Strap me to the rocket
Send me on my way
I’m heading up to heaven past the Milky Way
I’ve got no time for the sorrow
No time for the pain
If I don’t make it tomorrow
Can you wait another day
My neighbors not the brightest
As he looks into the sun
He tells me “working on my tool-shed
I can’t seem to get it done”
Well I’m sorry Mr. Pfifer
Though I’d love to lend a hand
The launch window is closing
And I must complete the rocket stand
Big fat steps now, big fat steps now, the planets are my step’in stones
Big fat steps now, big fat steps now, each galaxy’s a step’in stone.
I must get to my lovely
She isn’t from this world
But she loves pastrami sandwiches
Rye bread, the kind with swirls
When I finish packing all my gear
And I slingshot past the sun
You can bet my time in paradise
I’ll have nothing there but fun!
Big fat steps now, big fat steps now, the planets are my step’in stones
Big fat steps now, big fat steps now, each galaxy’s a step’in stone.
